Ed,
Thanks so much for the pro tip. I'll have to decide if I should tackle the swap to Dzus fasteners at the same time...
I've seen some ST's with the Carbon Fiber on that mid-fairing piece. I agree they do look nice, even if superfluous.
Been raining for the last couple of days and I haven't been able to take the ST out (I suppose that's no excuse but...). So, I'm itchin' to get back on and disappear for awhile.

Regarding your mid-fairing issue ...
I had luck replacing 2 of the mid-fairing tabs you described ... at least for the last 6 months or so.
I had c/f black thingies made, from a company in Australia, to replace the black plastic pieces. I'm still not sure why, but they do look nice.
Anyway, when we took off the black plastic pieces, two of the mounting brackets broke.
To get the c/f pieces on, we used a concoction of JB Weld, some cardboard (we made some cardboard dams to keep the JB Weld in place), and toothpicks (where the holes needed to be to drilled to attach the black pieces). Once the JB Weld dried, we broke off the toothpicks, then drilled an appropriately sized hole where the toothpicks were. We then used those holes to receive the screws which attached the black piece to the mid-fairing.
Have fun with your ST!

After around 6 months of searching, I finally found the ST for me. I drove down to Portland and picked up an 06 ST3s ABS. About 19,600 miles on it. Just had a major service a couple of months ago to repair the flaking rocker (RH intake, I believe) problem that got bad enough that a cam needed to be replaced. Only problem is the right mid-fairing has a broken tab so that black insert can't be installed. It might be fixed by glue near the absent tab, but I don't know.
The drive back to Seattle from Portland was wonderful. Wow! A beautiful machine.
