Robert, Good Fellow, I shall ensure a jar gets to you either by post or via me and my lady's next trans-atlantic meeting in April! Just need an address.... (Send offline, or you'll be swamped in orangey stuff)

When adjusting the chain I disconnect the suspension unit so that I can easily move the swinging arm to the position where the centres of the geabox output shaft, swinging arm pivot and rear wheel spindle centre are all in line. If the chain tension is then set and checked by running the chain round to check for any tight spots the chain can never become too tight whatever your weight or choice of suspension components. It is a pain to disconnect the suspension unit to do this but if you have a correctly adjusted chain and run a chain oiler the chain doesn't need attention very often.

Agreed, Eddy. Do the shock-disconnect once, then just measure the clearance at a given point and return the chain to that if it needs subsequent adjustment. Plus one on the oiler benefits...

Oh good man! There's a tenner that says the marmalade made here at IP22 2JJ is tastier than any made in Norwich!! By the way, Carl has done a job on my ST4 (no cam/rocker wear in 30K miles) and I should get it back today.
Anyway, Alistair; no way would your plan be worthwhile in my book, when application of a float charger on a periodical basis will keep the battery fine. I prefer not to hook the Optimate up longterm, partly because it's been suggested that batteries can boil dry, and mostly because I have too many batteries that need charging! Just a thought: the concept of the surface a battery sits on having an effect on self-discharge must surely relate to any film of moisture/condensation over it. A wood floor will be much warmer than a concrete one, after all.
