[DucatiST] Re: regulator rectifiers

Yes, this is the way to go.

The fact that this drawing is for a 3 phase unit is not an issue . I put an old 80's vintage Honda 3 phase reg-rect. on my ;98 ST@ and haven't looked back. I don't remember what model Honda it came off of, but the key thing is, it is a "SERIES REGULATOR" which means the charge current is controlled by a series pass element and only the current needed by the electrical system is taken from the alternator. In a "SHUNT REGULATOR" like what comes on the 98's, ALL the alternator current is taken ALL the time as the battery voltage is regulated by shunting un-needed current to ground by a shunt pass element. A very foolish design in this day,

The 3 phase "problem" is taken care of by simply connecting two of the yellow wires on the regulator together so now you have 2 wires for a single phasse alternator.
I also re-located the regulator under the lower triple clamd in the air stream.

Some one mentioned using a Susuki regulator, just be careful, I bought a bunch of used ebay regulators in my research and found the Susuki unit I got was a shunt regulator.
With the Honda unit, I don't have a GEN light. But, over the years I have learned not to trust them anyway. I installed a battery monitor I got freom the same company I got my battery tender from. I just press a button (It's mounted on top of the steering stem) and see the actual charge state of the battery.

And, yes, I'm an electronics engineer who used to design power control circuits!

It`s available from Eastern Beaver or on your favourite online auction site for late model Yamaha R1`s.
