Al,
Good info and tips indeed.
If there's any little spikes, I flick the gun tip (splat on the floor) and smooth them down.
Another thing I like to do is stagger the connections about and inch or two so when you wrap the wire with electrical tape or another long heat shrink section, you won't get a big bulge in the line, just make sure you measure twice and cut once, dohhh!.... =8^).

Hi People
With Ref. to what Dave mentioned, I feel that with marine equipment needing to be accessed quickly there has to be a proper connecting system those connectors especially used for the navy are extremely expensive and are designed to be heat proof vibration proof and to an extent blast proof..Cobolt is a tough material and I am pretty sure top end navy connectors are made from Cobolt.
I used this connector as I mentioned earlier to connect the field coil to the R/R
With Regards to Soldering I know that once its done you forget it. Making sure there are no spikes!
With Regards to heat shrink I use a Weller soldering pen (gas) with the blow lamp fitment.
This gives the perfect all round shrinkage, don't bother unless you really have to using the soldering iron to shrink anything....the end job looks untidy.
With regards to undoing what you have soldered. Lifes too short...cut the wire do your tests and re-expose the wire fit your heat shrik sleaves 2 - 3 different sizes and resolder... It does'nt take long.
