It is a big deal on the side of the road (though I do have a gas powered
soldering iron that I usually only carry on my Guzzis as the alternator
stators sometimes like to unsolder themselves!)

Also, I don't want to have to solder/unsolder things when working on my
bikes.

Use quality connectors with the correct current rating (those used on
the '98 ST2 are NOT rated for 30A!). The connectors I use are gold
plated and are soldered to the wires. They don't corrode and they don't
fail, and are rated at 40A. Made by FCT electronics (I just noticed
they have a crimp version as well)
