Re: [DucatiST] Re: Regulator/rectafier

Aaron,

I have a tendency to type just what I'm thinking at the moment and I focus on what I've done and what I (think) I know.  This sometimes sounds offensive when I read it later.  It is not intended to be that way, so please accept an apology if it is.  We're all trying to get to the same place and I very nearly parted out the bike, after the third failure in a very short period.

Good luck to you!

Jack,
I should have ended with the fact that I'm thinking of following the lead of yourself and others on my 99, which seems to have r/r problems. I guess my point is simply that the connector is one of the few times that systems like this are designed for repair. Now, if they were designed for longevity, with better wiring, rather than for price, we might have fewer problems.

All,
Stay tuned for a winter of me probing your collective knowledge of these bikes, as I fight my way through whatever gremlins I'm suffering [this MechE has slightly less love for electricity, because it's a bad thing if I can see/feel it working]. If you hear cursing around Boston, there's a fair chance it'll be me wrestling with them.

You're correct, not easier.  However, with the '98 ST2 it may make any number of repairs unnecessary.  I moved mine into the airstream, went up several sizes on the wire, connected directly to the battery, soldered everything.  After a year of misery before doing this, I've had two years when I have just forgotten about the former constant concern that on any trip (even across town), you might be pushing, rather than riding.  If something fails, I'll just cut the wires and do what's required.  On the road, in the event of a failure, crimped connections will get me home and I can resolder when I arrive.  An assortment of crimp sleeves is a light load.

This is a case where that adage is incorrect, the value of interconnects is in the ease with which their attached components can be either combined or removed/replaced.

As has been discussed my most of the list, desoldering a component is not the way to make a repair easier.

Always remember, things are designed to be built not repaired.
