The Shindengen FH012 is quite capable of handling the additional input current.

The Shindengen is a great improvement. However, I have not yet seen a MOSFET regulator for a single-phase alternator. That means it won't help with a '98 ST2, unfortunately. The one in the link is for a 3-phase alternator.
