Nickw thanks. The bike finds neutral ok at extreme inward travel, yet engages at the extreme outer end of travel. I use an aftermarket slave but the situation is about the same with the original. I'll bleed it again.
Full disclosure: the problem is with a dry clutch on a 2007 Monster S2R 1000. I saw the discussion and thought I might tap into the list's knowledge. I hope I won't get drummed out!
My ST3s is working perfectly.

How much free travel have you got? Can you get neutral at a standstill without pulling the lever right in? This would be pretty unusual for an ST but if so, you can simply increase the clearance at the lever by unscrewing the adjustment screw by the pivot. These are glue-locked at the Factory, but they have a spring detent which will stop them moving in use.
