Ah-ha! I wonder if that's the clue to your problem? With less spring power, it probably needs absolute release of the lever before the clutch grips. Added to that, any flexibility in the lever/slave system must be less with the lighter spring pressure against it. I bet you'd find it engaged sooner if you put those two springs back.
I have small hands and modest grip strength, but an aftermarket slave, Oberon currently, makes the clutch pull perfectly reasonable without spring mods. Get a grip!!
