It couldn't be as simple as having the kill switsch in the wrong position ??? (sounds dumb and disrespectfull but shame on me; had that once in the beginning...)

My buddy just picked up a '99 ST2 with about 22,000 miles. He got in one ride before it refused to start. The ignition switch brings all lights, gauges, fuel pump to life. But push the starter button and nothing happens, no dimming of lights or anything. The battery appears to have a full charge. I checked the fuses under the seat which are fine.
What to look for next? Any ideas?
