there was about 100 yards of fresh, undistributed gravel, and despite my best efforts to arrest my (very slow)speed, the rear slid out and I jumped off to watch my baby slide about 20 feet on the right side.
All of the highly experienced riders I know who still went down at some point, went down due to gravel or sand.
The particles just a bunch of mis-shapen ball bearings as far as the tires are concerned.
I think tires deal with the water kinda okay but not at all with sand and gravel.
FWIW when I see either sand or gravel I immediately get upright, off the gas and no brake (okay, maybe a tiny bit of front, very tiny).
I just roll through at whatever speed I then have.
It's worked fine so far.
