No offence meant, but a peek at the belts would tell precisely nothing, unless they're shredded to bits, as to peeking at the valves, this would entail whipping the heads off to do a decent job (unless you mean the clearances). Bearing in mind how easy (not) it is to access these areas on an ST I don't think many people would bother going through that trouble to buy a 13 year old bike.

Some documentation + seller's attitude and knowledge should be enough to decide whether to take the deal forward. I would never dream of getting near a Duc without evidence of TLC; there's plenty of them around so just be patient and wait for the one that ticks your boxes; you may have to pay a premium, but it'll be worth every penny (or cent).
