Re: [DucatiST] Multi verses ST4 (multi win)

After today I'm sold on the Multi. Here is why.

I've done a little over 600 on it this week and most of it two up with my wife on the back.

Today while going down a great road and meeting a great number of bicyclist (they were going the other way so no problem, I wish they'd been going our way cause their really easy to pass ). We came around a curve to find a car meeting us head on in our lane. Going slow and right beside a big peloton (a big gang we say here in the mountains). I knew there wasn't time to brake hard so I took the option of the 2 foot of shoulder on the road. It included a good wash out of about 6 inches deep and then a 6 foot drop off into a yard. Someone was mowing grass in the yard. I slowed down with a short jab on the brakes then hit the side of the road figuring this ain't going to end to good.

The bike went through the little gully onto the small grassy section down the side of the road , we rode the knifes edged and I eased her back on the road with nary a bobble. I don't think I'd have made it on the ST4, first off it would have probably bottom in the gully, second the shocks are stiffer with a shorter range and it would have unsettled it greatly.

The Multi went through it like it was an everyday occurrence. I really wanted to turn around and do some ass kicking but my wifey nixed that idea.

I guess I should count my blessings since it could have ended real badly for several people had we been in a car. Head on with bicyclist fatalities when the other car would have been knocked into the peloton. 0

My wife likes the position, though I think she may prefer the ST seating better. But a little more forward lean on a Multi with lower bars would cure that. So now I can say, it has 150hp and it's safer than the ST. ;)

So Robert, how has your ride been going and your opinions on the Multi?

I'm just up the road east a bit of you near Dulles.  Had the opportunity to ride a Multi for a few day last year escorting Paolo on his round world tour. Gotta give a call out to Donnie Unger at DucPond on that one. I'd called thinking it would be a cool idea to "borrow" his demo machine and therefore ride the same bike as Paolo. He was keen on it and I enjoyed a bit more than 800 miles in harsh weather over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Best I can say about the bike is it dos exactly what Ducati say it does, and does everything very well. Even better, I was very comfortable on it, much more than even my R1150RTL, which is a great machine. Problem is the Multi is ugly, expensive an more importantly, I'd need assurances that my wife is comfortable on it before getting one.  She loves the RT and is the only reason I'm not selling it to get either a nice ST3 (black please with three bags) or a Multi.

Cheers,

When at the Ducks head west meeting last weekend we made fast friends with a couple from the Tennessee mountains.
Thursday night they called and said they'd tried to catch us before we took off Sunday morning but we were in the flight pattern when they
came out. I'd mentioned that we were considering a Multi once I sell the old GT. They were going to let us give theirs a ride. They called to offer to
let us take it 2 or 3 weeks and see if we liked it. I'm pretty nervous about doing that but my arm was twisted......
So yesterday we met up in Bristol and I rode it back home. Tracey and I rode a bit more after we got to the home. The bike is a 2010 and had 1500 miles on
it when I started out. We put pretty near 300 on it yesterday.

I'm in the process of now really doing a detailed comparison between the two bikes. There are pros and cons to both. This opportunity will give
me a chance to be dang sure I want a Multi and wasn't merely infatuated upon my first meeting a couple of months back. If I can write this up
clearly enough I'll even submit it to a few bike mags and Ducati itself. (I'd still like to see a current ST;))

I feel extremely lucky to have this opportunity and quite indebted to the gracious couple from Tennessee.

Wish me luck!
