I second the Ventura rack. We've been using one about 5 years now. We love it. I've never noticed the weight but then
I can get a knee down coming up route 8 with my wife on the back and the Ventura rack. ;)

You also might look into the Ventura Rack system for luggage. I used one
for several years on an SS with good results.
