You are are spot on. One of the most important points with inline connections via soldering is to stagger, especially on the bike. even if the connections are sleeved eventually with 2 balls of metal rubbing against the insulation even with the minutist spike you will eventually get a short.
As you said also it looks tidier when its nicely staggered rather than the 'python belly'!
