Re: [DucatiST] quiet clutch mod, why?

Are you fellows embarrassed by a loud clutch? :}

Took me a while to get use to the wrenches in a coffee can sound but once I did,
I love it. :) I like the expression I get from other bikers when I pull in. They all look at
me funny and move on off.

I fiddled with the qc mod with a Sureflex one weekend when I had some time. I didn't spend a lot of time with it because my set up wasn't that loud to begin with. I ended up like Nate just going back to the original set up. I could definately get it to quiet down but the engagement wasn't right. Would creep when in gear. I swapped some of the discs with thinner stock plates but still couldn't get it right and I was reluctant to short the number of plates to get stack height lower. I have a MPL basket and it's fairly quiet anyway.

Maybe it has nothing to do with being surflex, but just because it was a new stack with a used basket, or possibly some other reason that I have not thought of. I honestly have no clue. I am not that intelligent with motorcycles, and most of what I learn either comes from here or from trial and error. I tried many times, at different mileages; to get the qc mod to work, and every time I came up short. Either the stack was too big, or not big enough to keep it quiet. I changed out some of the plates with slimmer ones from the old barnett pack, and still no go. I got tired of dicking with it, and just gave up.

At that point, I just figured that maybe there is something with the pack that kept it from working correctly. Do I have proof, absolutely not. The guy from the ms forum, tonered, had a theory about why it did not work, but it was just that, a guess. I do know that the barnett pack that came with my bike when I got it, was very easy to quiet down; with some help from Jack Davidson and a few of his used friction plates. Thanks again Jack!
