First I want to thank everyone for their input concerning the problem with the rear mounting bolt and case. I called Matt at Munroe Motors in San Francisco who has had many years of experience with this problem. He has actually fixed this exact problem on a number of bikes. He has an excellent welder that he uses. He told me that the best fix is to pull the engine out and weld up the hairline crack. With the engine out of the frame he can completely weld the crack not only from the top but from the front also. Another alternative is to weld it in the frame which would only allow the top of the case to be repaired. Not as good a fix but it may work ok since the crack is very small and nothing has broken off of the case.

[DucatiST] Cracked Case/Mounting Bolt update
Have been thinking alot about what to do. First, I cancelled my trip to San Diego. I work at home so its easy for me to pick up and go when I want, so not a problem change plans. Most importantly, I have realized my biking needs have changed over the last few years. I have always owned many Ducs at one time to allow me to enjoy short jaunt rides, track days, two up, and long hauls. Over the last few years, the track day need has kinda left me (after 3500 track only miles in 6 years on a 916). I sold it last year. I had a hooligan monster (944 kit, Keihins, Mag wheels, etc) Sold it this year. Am currently selling my Hyper since I really never rode it much. I have a buyer picking it up tomorrow. So I really only need one bike. That bike is an ST. I sat on the new Multi but didnt like the seating position. I like the ST as a sport and touring bike. I particularly like the earlier ST styles. Also, I bought a nice road bicycle, and have been riding it everyday. The exercise has really helped strengthen my back and relieve the pain.
So I have decided to try the quick welding fix in the frame and then sell the bike as is and look for a nice low mileage ST4S. So if any one knows of one in Northern California, let me know. I saw the one on LT's site (drool, drool), a 2002 ST4S. That is one nice bike with Carbon wheels and fairings and all the trick parts. Not sure I want to spend all that money, but we shall see what comes my way.
Mike
