Steve Davies:

Cricket backs Steven Davies after UK player announces he is gay
Andy Wilson / The Guardian UK / 28 February 2011

Steven Davies has received congratulations from present and former county and international team-mates, captains and even Stephen Fry for becoming the first English cricketer to announce his homosexuality during his career. But none could empathise with him quite like Alan Hansford.

Hansford, who had four seasons with Sussex from 1989-92, outed himself in slightly lower-profile circumstances in the spring of 2008, suggesting in an email exchange with his former Combined Universities captain Mike Atherton which appeared on the Times website that "there can't be too many accountants who dismissed you twice in a first-class match".

Hansford had other matters on his mind when he learned of Davies's announcement, as he was preparing for his father's funeral on Tuesday. But he did send a message of support via text: "Good luck to Steve Davies -- he has done the hard bit."

That reaction was echoed on Twitter by the Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale, who is away with the England Lions in Barbados -- where homosexuality is illegal, although the island is regularly described as having one of the largest gay populations in the Caribbean. "Good on Stevie D, good bloke, takes some bottle," Gale tweeted. "Good role model, you are who you are, others may be more confident to come out now."

Vikram Solanki, the chairman of the Professional Cricketers' Association who was Davies's captain for his five seasons at Worcestershire until the latter's move to Surrey last summer, added: "Steve has the full support of all his colleagues in cricket. Many of those he plays with and against have known about this for some time and none of them regard it as anything other than an entirely personal matter."

In India Ian Bell and the coach Andy Flower spoke on behalf of the England squad. "We knew before the Ashes series," said Bell. "That didn't change anything for us. He is a very popular guy in our team. We're all with him, and the more cricket he can play for England the better. He is a good mate of mine and that doesn't change absolutely anything."

Flower, the first person to whom Davies opened up ahead of the Ashes tour, added: "I would like to make it very clear that Steve is first and foremost a very talented cricketer and a valued member of the England set-up. Steve has had and will continue to have the full respect and support of the entire squad and everyone involved in England cricket. I have no doubt that he will continue to work hard to regain a place in the England squad."

Fry was, predictably, pithier. "Brave, charming, modest and inspiring," he said. "No big deal yet of course a huge deal. Top man Steven Davies."
"Every gay and lesbian person who has been lucky enough to survive the turmoil of growing up is a survivor. Survivors always have an obligation to those who will face the same challenges."

Hi Reed,

LEDs work on low voltages, so those bought at Radioshack will likely be bare and need resistors added for 12v. Better to look in car accessory shops for ones already rated for 12v, which have tiny resistors attached. I can buy sets of four 5mm red ones with at least a yard of cable attached to each one at Halfords in the UK for a few pounds (Prism brand, by Ring Automotive). For my eyes, red is MUCH more noticeable than the usual green signal reminder, and I tried both when I first fitted LEDs. You need then to find somewhere that will have them directly pointed at you and visible in your visor's field-of-view at all times. Don't worry about being blinded; it's not an issue because they need only be in your peripheral vision. The crucial thing is to log into your brain that there is a signalling process ongoing, and those tiny red flashes are an infallible prompt, as they begin the moment you operate the switch.

Once mounted (in a 6mm hole) singly or in multiples, run the cables to the nearest connection of your signal circuit, probably close to the front signals. If you solder-tin the wires, you can just push them down the side of the standard bullet connectors, because they only take a tiny current. One wire to each OEM cable (wired in parallel) and if they don't work, reverse the connections as they are diodes and only work in one direction of current. So long as they are 12v-rated, they won't come to harm however you connect them.

At the expense of finding room for at least two LEDs, you will then be reminded of which side you are signalling, even!

That's the easy way for the electrically-challenged. Currently, I favour a single 8mm super-bright red LED with a couple of extra ordinary diodes attached so I can connect it to both front signal circuits without any interference between them. I can provide a circuit if necessary, but there are more competent electricians here who can advise.

Give it a go! I think it's a major safety feature, and it stays under your control rather than being arbitrary or subject to complicated circuitry and/or feedback from other systems.

[DucatiST] Re: ST3s Signal minder

I bought accent LED lights from Cycle Gear with sticky on the backs and put them in my mirrors. I fed the wires up the mirror stalks, and put on disconnects so I can still take the mirrors off. Works nice once I got it all sorted. Maybe better would have been something in the dash panel.

LEDs draw such little power, that it doesn't affect the original circuit. I added LED lights to the back also, and never changed the resistance of the circuit, and it works just fine.

Cheers,
Phil

Can you have too many LED lights on your bike. Never seen it.

"...But it gradually seemed to me that I'd made myself believe something that wasn't true. I'd made myself believe that I was fine and happy and fulfilled on my own without the love of anyone else. Being in love was like China: you knew it was there, and no doubt it was very interesting, and some people went there, but I never would. I'd spend all my life without ever going to China, but it wouldn't matter, because there was all the rest of the world to visit... And I thought: am I really going to spend the rest of my life without feeling that again? I thought: I want to go to China. It's full of treasures and strangeness and mysteries and joy."
