Yes.
I have 50k miles on my '02 ST4s and just installed my 4th ECU. (ECU #3, purchased brand new for $500 from Moto Corsa, installed 2k miles ago runs on one cylinder until the temp reaches 160 F. Then it runs fine) New units are getting to be hard to find and can cost $1,300. Based on my research, the 59M ECU is an unstable product ('03 ST4s included). They can fail mechanically or they can lose their program somehow. If they fail mechanically they cannot be repaired. Bobby at Houston Superbikes (was Desmo Porsche) can reflash units that have lost their program.
To avoid being stranded, I always travel with a proven, spare ECU in my tank bag. Crazy.
Ducati has left us hanging with this problem. Do you think I would buy a new MTS 1200? Not likely.
