From a mechanic's standpont it shouldn't really matter. But of course, from an engineering standpoint there probably is some reason.
Mine comes in from the right and has been good for 20,000 + miles with no problems.
What IS important, is that the axle carriers, inner swingarm and inner side plates are really clean and grease free. If any grease is on these mating surface areas there is a chance the axle can move under acceleration and braking shock loads.
Most modern grease types can withstand hundreds of thousands of pounds of psip (pounds per square inch pressure). The minuscle 100 pounds of torque we apply to secure the axle is no match for these greases.
The inner nut face and threads are the only areas to lightly apply moly grease.

In looking at a parts book for my 2003 ST4s, I noticed that the rear axle is inserted from the right hand side of the bike. I purchased my bike used, and it came with the axle inserted from the left hand side. Now, I assume it really should make no difference, but....that is the question. should I turn it around, or just not worry about it?
