Sorry to hear about the smash. Waking up full of tubes* is the worst part.
I too remember writing notes on a pad that I could feel but couldn't
see what I was writing. I was imagining I was in a Nazi experimental
hospital! I'd rather die than be on a ventilator again.
So glad to hear you're on the mend. I've not had the pleasure of riding
a motorbike near LA, but I bought a Cannondale MTB and cycled straight
to the beach track down the nearest steps. Cruising into Venice on a
Vespa sounds just right. I second Ted Gooch's doctor's advice.
