[DucatiST] Tire Sizes

 

Hi there,
I picked up a 2001 ST2 this summer w/ 7000 miles on it. Havn't ridden it much, lees than 1000. Got other bikes and I wanted to go through it this winter before I rode it seriously.
Among the items needed is tires. I'm looking at Angel STs or Dunlop Roadsmarts. The PO fitted a 180/55-17 to the rear, all my research indicates 170/60-17 is stock. The wiki here says a 180 is a alternative.
Anyone have any feedback on a 170 vs 180 in terms of handling etc?

Also, having lurked here for a couple months, it seems there's a shim kit available for use. What's the rules, protocol, deposit, etc for using it. I'm hoping to get this bike on my lift shortly after the new year for belt replacement, valve check, tires, etc.
