Sorry I wasn't clear Bill. The battery life is affected, not the Tender.
In flooded cell types they can boil the battery dry. In sealed units they can shorten battery life too. I have personally seen it happen with the older flooded cell types and Yuasa sealed batteries as well. Both Yuasa and Ducati recommend you only use the Tender in the manner I suggested, but do whatever makes you comfy. YMMV

What difference does it make to leave it hooked up? I leave these things, or similar Yuasa devices, hooked up to various boats and bikes whenever they are not in use. Some of these tenders are well over ten years old and function just fine.
