You have a keen memory son.
The bike was called "project 900" designed by GM of Turin.
It's on page 155 of Mick Walker's "Ducati Twins 1970 onwards". Made the stock 860 GT look stunningly beautiful. Well, not really.
I tried to google a photo but couldn't come up with one.

I seem to vaguely remember a Ducati cruiser with an 860 bevel engine, probably about 1980 or so, it was truly hideous. I don't know if it ever made it into production though. Anybody else remember it?
