Thankyou all for your advice,

I will scrap the idea of removing the battery; take up Derek's approach.
As I will be at a loose end now, if Jan would kindly forward me her recipe for making marmalade, I will endeavor to 'try my hand' into making marmalade over these winter months!
Is it much different to making 'Blackberry Jam'?
