Re: [DucatiST] Hibernating batteries over Winter

Alistair,
that's basically ok, but a lot of faff to go through. Ok, if you don't
have better things to do with your time:) (But what can I say, I spent
yesterday making marmalade instead of buying it.)

I think you need to make sure that the battery is fully charged before
you drain the acid. It seems to me that if you flush the battery with
pure water, then you will need to later flush it out with battery acid
before you refill it, because the paste in the electrodes will be full of
water rather than acid. The point of flushing is not to remove surplus
acid, but to remove any precipitate within the battery. (This precipitate
_might_ cause internal short circuits in the battery. The precipitate
is lead sulphate and lead oxide.)

Put the caps back to keep dust out. Conventional lead acid batteries
are vented. Besides, you only generate hydrogen when you overcharge
a battery.

If you've flushed out the acid then storing the battery just above freezing,
say 4 - 5C would be better than 15C. (Halves the reaction rate.)
If you've just drained the cells of a fully charged battery, then you could
store it below 0C.

Remember, whether you buy conventional batteries over the counter or by
mail order, they're transported charged and drained. Either you or the
dealer adds the acid when you want to start using it. I've never checked
whether such batteries arrive damp or completely dry.

After doing your laundry, the holes that appear in cotton and nylon
clothing will be due to tiny splashes of battery acid - so don't blame
the moths, wear polyester! Thankfully, marmalade doesn't wreck clothes:)

Personally, I think it's well worth spending twice the money on batteries
that last three times as long ("Advanced Glass Matt" batteries) and
spending more time doing fun things.
