Re: [DucatiST] Re: Counter shaft sprocket flat to the engine?

I tend to agree with those saying it's a chain alignment issue.  If you're not sure about the chain alignment, find a way to be sure.  That front sprocket is pushing and pulling the retainer in the groove and if you have significant pressure in either direction, it's going to chew the metal off rather quickly.  I'm fairly anal about chain alignment and, out of 6 Ducs that are ridden regularly, have never seen a worn one, nor have I ever replaced one.  If you want to save some time, LT Snyder (Desmotimes.com) sells some sliders for the ST that are tight on the swingarm and have a tiny, precision pointer.  Really expensive (IIR, around $90), but I've checked mine, and if the pointers are on the same spot for both sides, the chain is straight.

whew, I'm glad it's flat side out cause I thought maybe I'd made my second mistake. ;)

Paul, you still got my address?

as to news, so far this winter, spun bearings in the Case Loader backhoe,
chewed up the gears in the transfer case on the skidder,
welded a few bearings to the equipment trailer axle,
smashed the back end of a saw off when a tree twisted off the stump,

I've two full time jobs, logging and repairing broken logging equipment.

sometimes, no news is good news.

Definitely flat side out, Robert. I'll send you a laser chain alignment tool, so you can see how coplanar your sprockets are. Its winter, so any news will seem exciting!
