[DucatiST] Re: St2 or St4

Why would you ever get rid of an RG500?

Do not overlook the ST3, best of both worlds.
Mileage in the 45 - 50 range, cannot vouch for the 2 or the 4
Service intervals are the same across all models, every 10k kms for valves and every 20k kms or two years for belts. You can stretch those durations but you do so at your own risk.
Later seats were more comfortable, but a lot of the older bike have aftermarket seats on them now. What saddle works best is like asking what oil works best.
I tour with my ST3 and commute daily (24k miles so far), it works great for everything. Well, truth be told it is a bit much for a 10 mile local street commute, but it carries everything I need. I think the ST4 was geared a bit higher, so low speed stuff is not its strong suit. Again many owners would have changed the gearing anyway. The debate rages on over which fairing is better, mine is the later model and I think it looks and works better, plus the headlight is very good, not so on the stock pre 2003 models.
Best of luck to you.

I have long admired Ducati’s and have decided to sell of the Suzuki, which I have long desired and get a bike with touring capabilities. I have read as much as could have got my hands on about the ST2 and ST4’s yet feel the need to get help from those that have had long term ownership rather than merely test pilots who have ridden the bikes for maybe a day and then write as experts.
