I had them on my ST2 and they worked great (assuming same brackets).

Of course, they were developed using my bike (with a few tails to get right) so fit perfectly. I would guess some difference between bikes, but I'm a bit surprised at that much.

They are not required, but at least for me, really helped stabilize and the removing installing.

I made my own brackets but they too were a pain in the arse, trying to get everything lined up and the Dzus to fasten was very difficult. Eventually I chucked the brackets and fitted the clip on Dzus receptacles to the top of the upper part of the lower fairing, It's been like this for about 4 years now with no problems. I can whip the lower fairings off in about 60 seconds but it takes a few longer to re-fit them. The RH side is a bit awkward to locate around the coolant reservoir but at least I can leave all of the top fairing in place :-)

I tried the "kit" also, also had the same results. The fasteners, once lined up, would not stay done up. I went back to the wellnuts but with less of them and everything stays together just fine. Now there's a couple less fasteners to deal with!
