Hi All

I am from South of Sydney, Australia and am currently a Suzuki RG500 owner but not for long. I have long admired Ducati's and have decided to sell of the Suzuki, which I have long desired and get a bike with touring capabilities. I have read as much as could have got my hands on about the ST2 and ST4's yet feel the need to get help from those that have had long term ownership rather than merely test pilots who have ridden the bikes for maybe a day and then write as experts.

I am leaning towards an ST4 t the moment but realise that the ST2 also is a great bike. I am so impressed with a couple of reports i have read by ST2 owners whose bikes show well over 100,000k's and still going strong.
I hope to do lots of touring in Australia on whatever bike I buy. Service costs are an issue for me and so need to know the following.

I do my own maintenance and it has been very easy on my wallet. I put clutch plates in it at about 25K and
install new belts every two years. At the same time I do plugs and clean the air filter. Oil every year.

I have owned a 996 with the 4 valve engine and it does cost more to maintain if you have a dealer do it.
They pull the cams to do the valve shims and it adds to the price.

1 Yes I think its will cost more to maintain a 4 valve engine

2 Properly maintained both bikes will serve you well for a long time

3 We get 50 MPG on most trips in the mountains riding the ST2. My 996 never did that but it was ridden harder.

4 The ST2 has very good low end torque and its a great two up bike.

5 Both should be done at 12,000 miles foe belts and valves. My ST2 has never needed the valves adjusted.

6 Both should feed the same, we have the Corbin seat on ours with the back rest for the wife. Its removable.

I have other bikes so the St is mostly a two up rider. I have a 900 FE that is my daily rider.

I hope this helps a little
