Andy,
A '98 ST2 should have a single-phase charging system. You can tell by following the fat pair of wires coming out of the left side cover and you should find a large, white, oval-shaped plug that is the interface between the stator and the regulator/rectifier. If you got lucky and find a smaller connector with three yellow wires, you have a 3-phase system, which actually could only happen if the engine had been swapped in your bike.
I have bought one stator and one regulator/rectifier from: http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/ducati-road-motorcycles-electrical-parts-1259-0.html . Good stuff, my experience tells me and in the UK.
Ask almost anyone with a '98 ST2 and you probably will hear a list of mods to make the charging system reliable. It's a good idea, says me, but takes a lot of effort.

Hi All,
The ST2 was out front waiting to go with tent and sleeping bag for the Stafford Motorcycle Show. A knock at the door, the next door neighbour had reversed out of her drive and into my bike knocking it over. Long story short cosmetic damage, battery requiring replacing and a blown regulator/rectifier.
The question is, are there any othere R/R from other Ducati modles that are compatable with the ST2 (it's a "98"). I don't know if it's a 2 or 3 phase model (2 or 3 yellow wires) . I'm taking it apart on Friday so will know then. Also are there any after market R/R's avalible in the UK and has anyone fitted one, are they reliable?
I've found this one a RR50?
