Re: [DucatiST] Regulator/Rectifier again?

Moved my R/R to the bottom of the air duct (outside, right at the front), cut a bit of the plastic off at the bottom of the nose fairing to assure airflow and mounted one with fins ('98 ST2).  You cannot see the missing plastic unless you're kneeling or lying at the front of the bike.  Then, ran #10 wire, soldered and heat-shrink wrapped, from the original stator leads to it.  Ran #8 from the R/R to positive and negative battery terminals, and tossed the original stator plug.  The harness plug that went to the R/R just stays.  It's not needed, but you can't cut it off.  This arrangement, monitored by a voltmeter on the dash, has had no problem for a couple of years and maybe 18-20K miles.

I think the air duct is a very bad idea, as there can be no airflow at all when stopped.  As the clearance is low, you can't use a R/R with fins, either.  All the cooling depends on using the duct as a heat sink and I truly believe it's not up to the task.  My one voltage drop came on an extremely hot summer day, stuck in endless traffic on the approach to the Holland Tunnel to NYC.  I believe the '98 ST is just not capable of handling that situation.

Hi Larry and all,

I've looked at a cheaper option of a Kawasaki or Honda but I don't have the time to chop it about so I'm going for the RR50 plug and play. Larry, does the RR50 run cooler that the standard Ducati RR? Also I'm thinking of cutting a slot in the side of the air duct to feed the cables through so I can mount the RR in the duct. Or another option is just to drill some holes in the faring that wraps around the air duct to feed some cooling air to the RR. Anyone had a go at this?

Andy, I have the RR50 from this site works great. Keep the old one as a spare, I like the plug and play in case there is ever a failure on the road.

Subject: [DucatiST] Regulator/Rectifier again?

Hi All,

The ST2 was out front waiting to go with tent and sleeping bag for the Stafford Motorcycle Show. A knock at the door, the next door neighbour had reversed out of her drive and into my bike knocking it over. Long story short cosmetic damage, battery requiring replacing and a blown regulator/rectifier.

The question is, are there any othere R/R from other Ducati modles that are compatable with the ST2 (it's a "98"). I don't know if it's a 2 or 3 phase model (2 or 3 yellow wires) . I'm taking it apart on Friday so will know then. Also are there any after market R/R's avalible in the UK and has anyone fitted one, are they reliable?

I've found this one a RR50?

http://www.bbbikeshop.co.uk/acatalog/Ducati_Regulator_Rectifiers.html

and this one on eBay?

and this?

Hope you can help?

Kind Regards,

Andy, ST2 '98' North West, England.
