Oh Robert, you're making me very nostalgic and jealous! Back in
'71 - '73 I rode a Velocette Viper (350 cc little brother to the
Venom). I kick myself for selling it, but I was a hard up student.
Sweet ride. Velocette knew how to make a bike that would brake, by
'60s standards, and steer well. Only surpassed by Italian motorcycles,
'though not the TV175 Lambretta that I used to ride, but far better
than Triumph or BSA. Oil leaks aside, it was a very pleasant ride and
it used to overtake all the light traffic on the M1 (main north/south
motorway/freeway/autobahn/autostrada in the UK). Nice looking too.
I used it to commute from home near Felixstowe to college in Huddersfield*
and the occasional weekend in London. I used to dream about a desmodromic
conversion for it, even though it was the wrong model!
* about 250 miles each way. (Yellow PVC trousers and jacket from the
Felixstowe surplus store, to keep me warm in the snow!) If I'd had
Google maps, I see I could have done it in just 225 miles!
