The reason for Alfa's low secondhand values are the same as for the low value of our ST's, namely public perception. Many people still equate modern Alfas and Ducatis with the poor build quality and reliability of those produced in the 1970s and '80s. Even now when mentioning Ducati people will make disparaging remarks even if they have no personal experience with them. They just remember stories from years ago and pass them along as fact. When I bought my brand new ST2 in 1998 and told people that I was going to ride it to Prague and Budapest, self appointed gurus advised me to make sure I had good breakdown cover and take lots of spares etc. I ignored them of course and the trip went without incident, if anything the bike was running better after the 3000 mile trip than it was before. The total attention needed was an adjustment to the chain.
Ducatis and Alfas make great secondhand buys right now, maybe I'll get myself another Alfa. I still miss my GTV6!
Cheers,
Allen
