[DucatiST] What makes an alternator light NOT come on?

 

Well, ok, I'm stumped. Any hints are appreciated.

I have a '98 ST2 that runs great except for that bit about not charging the battery.

The alternator light does not come on even when the ignition is initially turned on.

Replacing the rectifier did not change this.

The alternator light bulb per se works fine.
