RE: [DucatiST] Break Down

Dave,

I have always told my kids, that when the car dies because of a dead
battery, there are 2 possibilities:

1. If you can boost the battery and the car stays running normally when
disconnected, but will not restart again without being reboosted, the
battery is bad and needs to be replaced.

2. If you boost the battery and the car stays running as long as the other
car is connected, but dies as soon as it is disconnected from the other
battery, it is probably the alternator/voltage regulator that is bad and the
battery is not getting a proper charge. You can check this by charging the
battery, and seeing if it will start the car on its own for a while before
dying again after an hour or so of running. In this case, the car is running
total loss (not being recharged by the charging system) and gradually
becomes discharged by the electrical loads on the system until it can no
longer supply enough power to keep the ignition running.

Just because a battery is new does not mean that it is good. Get it load
tested if you can or just get it replaced under warranty.

There are more sophisticated ways of checking the system, but this is a good
place to start. Get yourself a decent multimeter (electrical tester) and we
can go through other options. The can be had for $5 - $10 at the cheap tools
stores.

Hmm, the fact that you can wiggle wires and make things work has me
wondering what else may be involved. Do you have wiring drawing for the
bike? How about the service manual? I think the owner's manual has a wiring
drawing as well. Let us know and we will see where we can go.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions. Lord knows I have been doing
enough of that myself these past few weeks!

Subject: [DucatiST] Break Down

G'day all I own a ST2 and it is having problems draining batteries, I bought
a new battery and rode the bike every couple of days, the battery was
purchased in end of July, it is already flat and I don't know what is
causing it.
There are NO good quality mechanics in the local district that can trace and
repair the fault, can anyone give any ideas where to look?

When it won't start sometimes I can jiggle the wires near the solinoid and
it will come good until I stop it again then it can only be started by
jumper leads from the car.

Thanks for any help Dave..
