Yeah, physics is good. 

Best to flush and fill with quality synthetic brake fluid.

Stiff brake hoses (i.e. stainless steel braided) also help to eliminate that mushy feel, especially when the going gets hot!

As a brake specialist is concur with Nick's assessment. Tricks don't
work only good solid physics. Bleed your brakes properly and you will
have no problems. Except of course when the fluid boils which is a
subject for a whole other discussion.
