A couple of months ago a got a (new to me) 1999 ST4 with 1800 miles on it. Looks like it was kept in a museum. Needless to say, I've rode the hell out of it. Packed about 3000 miles on this summer. So anyways, being familiar with Ducatis, I know that certain year model Ducati 4-valvers suffered from the dreaded flaking rocker problem. I was curious if anybody could remember what years were affected. The dealer doesn't seem too concerned about it. When I brought it up, the mechanic just said, "yea, just take a look at the oil screen when you change the oil". Personally, I'd rather catch it early!

Good to hear from you, Joseph, and you got a great bike with very low mileage! My ST4 of the same year has not needed any rockers yet in nearly 30K miles, 27K of which has been in my care. Good oil is obviously important, but not revving it as if it was a 916 superbike is key, I suspect. That way, you get MUCH longer valve check periods too. Cherish that bike: it's one of the very best STs IMO!
