I would occasionally notice harmonic vibration with the 14/42 sprockets. As for the even or odd rear sprocket, if you are really concerned about even number of teeth causing more wear than an odd number of teeth, keep track of how it hits and shift the chain by one tooth every time you put on a new rear tire. Otherwise, the only decent choices are 15/43 or 15/47, which are unlikely to be satisfactory. I liked 15/44 and with a quality steel sprocket, never noticed any sprocket wear that I could blame on the chain hitting it the same way every time.

As for a certain spot on the sprocket hitting the exact same link of the chain, that can only happen if the number of links in the chain are an even multiple of the number of teeth, which is pretty unlikely. A 108 or 110-link chain is going to hit at a different spot on a 44-tooth sprocket every time a given link contacts it.

The only rules I follow is to use a 15 rather than 14 in front if at all possible and don't use a 45 with a 15 or you'll get some harmonic vibrations. All other suggestions are too minor to bother with.
