Flaking rockers occurred on all desmoquattro motors from 1996 through 2003. Its typical to have a few flake during the life of the bike. 748 seemed to be the most suseptible. I have replaced 3 rockers on my 99 ST4 with 52,000 miles.
I carry rocker arms that have been ground and replated on an exchange basis.

Greetings Listers,
I've been lurking for quite a long time on the list and I'm not sure that I've ever posted. I've owned a Monster since 2005, and lusted after STs almost that long. A couple of months ago a got a (new to me) 1999 ST4 with 1800 miles on it. Looks like it was kept in a museum. Needless to say, I've rode the hell out of it. Packed about 3000 miles on this summer. So anyways, being familiar with Ducatis, I know that certain year model Ducati 4-valvers suffered from the dreaded flaking rocker problem. I was curious if anybody could remember what years were affected. The dealer doesn't seem too concerned about it. When I brought it up, the mechanic just said, "yea, just take a look at the oil screen when you change the oil". Personally, I'd rather catch it early!
cheers and safe trails,
Joseph
