HEY!

Looks like it's harder to remember details from 30+ years ago than from last week.

How come I didn't get that memo?

The USA makers used clamshell molds for their glass belted designs.

It was Michelin that invented segmented molds which pulled the tire carcass outward around its circumference and made for a much more accurate tire.

If I catch you guys posting stuff as if you know what you're talking about only to find you have it ass-backwards,

- again.

well . . .

there'll be consequences.

PS, since the Michelin factories were all destroyed/damaged during WWII they were able to rebuild them using their new segmented mold technology and get the jump on the USA makers who were struggling along with their outdated clamshell tech.

So when you buy a German/French/Japanese product and wonder why the USA guys can't do it as well, well - there many be some reasons.

But the USA tire makers did eventually switch over.

Interestingly, when I ran a tire store (way way back) there were 50+ brands of tire in the world but only 7 factories that made tires.

All of the above applies to automobile tires, not MC tires.
