RE: [DucatiST] Now Winter Storage - Was Update on "Non-Starting" Issues (long)- Success?

Northern New Jersey, I thought you guys could ride year round!!! <grin> I live in the Great White North, BTW

As far as the fuel stabilizer goes, just get something from the local auto parts store and toss it in. Make sure you add enough, but not too much i.e. read the directions. You have a 21 litre tank (whatever the heck that is in US Gals). (Yes, I know what the conversion is, I am just too lazy to figure it out  (21/3.8 if you care).

A couple of things that I forgot:

You can also fog the cylinders with engine storage oil (see the auto parts store), although this is not as important as it used to be because of the nikasil lining in the cylinders. Cast iron cylinder liners will rust. If the bike is stored where there is high humidity, this is not a bad idea.

Although this does not apply to the ST series, if the bike has carburetors, they should be stored dry. IE turn off the fuel and run the engine until it dies, then drain any remaining fuel out of the float bowls. I don't bother with stabilizer for those bikes. If you leave gas in the carbs, you may be in for a surprise in the spring. The "modern" fuels don't store worth a damn and can turn to gum and other nasty deposits.

Kind of depends on where you live and what kind of weather you are going to get.

Where I live, we get 4 months of snow and lousy riding weather. In my case I will:

-          add fuel stabilizer and fill the fuel tank completely

-          give the bike a bath and dry it thoroughly

-          run the engine to make sure that the stabilized gets completely through the fuel injection system

-          change the oil and filter

-          oil the chain

-          add leads for a battery tender or remove the battery completely (charge the battery once a month, or put the battery tender on a timer, they don't need to be connected 24/7)

-          park the bike on the center stand in a dry location (I don't worry about propping up both wheels), leave the tires with the normal pressures

-          cover it with an old sheet or breathable cover

-          drop by and say hello once and a while during the winter to make sure that it knows that it is still loved.

There are a whole bunch of other things that you can do if you want to get anal, but other that spreading mouse bait around the storage area (to keep the mice from taking up residence in the air box etc), that is all I do.

Alternately, park it in your living room, and ignore the stares from SWMBO!

Speaking about winter its my first year of going into winter. What's the best way to winterize my ST2. Just had a 6K service done on 9/12/11. Any advice folks?
