That's the ticket! To refine the job, I made a brass mandrel that fits the hole quite closely and then 'walk' the buttons around by moving the free end of the mandrel bar in circles. This avoids damaging the plating on the buttons, and if you add a jet of brake cleaner at the exposed gap, it will flush any dirt out. This works better than just tapping the buttons as it gets to the muck trapped beneath the springs, but just tapping them is better than nothing...
