Open up the clutch, pull the plates out and then see what the noise is like. You'll be better able to locate the source. Hopper

It could have uncovered the oil pickup and lost available oil to feed the system. This, in turn, could have resulted in a spun bearing on the crank or rods. Just checked silencers and springs and fit….no that's not it. The clanking noise comes from inside the motor. I know there was a clanking noise before the fall but never in a millions years as loud as that. What the hell could be making that noise? Belts (they are two years old and 1000 miles on them). Valves that would become out of adjustment after this minor fall. How about the shaft (adjustable) on the left hand side to change gears? What could have broken in a minor drop like that? Maybe the oil is old….full synt…last January of December 2010. I have ridden approx. 2000 miles on that old….I sure do not know anymore. André P\S: in the video I have sent, you can very distinctly hear that clanking noise. Difficult to tell from that but it sounds like mine after I dropped the exhausts to fit luggage. When I refitted them I didn't get the sliding joint to seal properly. The silencers are in a sliding joint which can come apart – the parts are held together by springs but instead of sealing they rest with the end of the silencer tubing on the end of the downpipe. This allows gas to escape from the joint and is very loud. It's the work of a moment to pop the joint back together again. I can see that in a drop the pipe cold possibly pop out. Worth a look. Hope that helps, IaNE
Nick, as per your request and finally I found out how to upload in you tube. The following link will let you hear the noise from my ST4 at idle. Please note the little part missing where the lever (clutch) rests. Your comments will be very much appreciated. http://youtu.be/NZFJucYSoQI Thanks Andre Andre -
If the extra noise is only there when the bike is in neutral, it's got to be something to do with the clutch or transmission. However, if there's no clutch slip that wouldn't explain the loss of power, and I don't see how the loss of the screw adjuster at the master cylinder end could cause the bike to idle more noisily when the bike's in neutral. Are you sure there is not more noise when in gear as well as in neutral? If so, it could be that when the bike went down the exhaust touched and pushed the header pipe out of line where it goes into the cylinder. If the seal between the pipe and the cylinder is broken the bike will sound noisier, and it will have an effect on the power. If the exhausts are set up the same as they are on my ST4, I suspect that going down on one side could affect either or both header pipes, so it would be worth checking both seals. If you can get close to the exhausts where they enter the cylinder it should be fairly obvious if either of them is blowing.
Good luck, please let us know how you get on

I really would need some help with a problem with my bike. Last week I dropped it on the left hand side. The only damage was to the clutch lever that was a bit crooked. I fixed that with a bit of heat and caution. The problem that I have been having since is that time every time the transmission is in neutral the overall noise of the motor is a lot louder. I have noticed at the end of the clutch lever (same as the brake lever) a small rectangular plastic piece held together with two small gold screws. It seem that with the brake there is a small part on this piece where the lever seems to rest when not in use. Well, for the clutch lever this part (1 inch wide to 1 1/2 inch long) is gone. Could it be what is causing this rough and noisy idling, I mean the loss of this small part. Also, the bike does not seem to have as much power as before like it is struggling in low to medium rpm Thanks you so much for your help Andre
