Hmmm, I think it probably comes under the heading of better engineering! Ducati have been working towards longer service intervals for a while, and the belts were probably the last item on the list. Add to that high revs for high power, and a 'rigid' drive that doesn't allow variation in cam timing makes much more sense. I looked at the 1199 motor at the NEC, and it bristles with good detail, from the starting decompressor to the crank vacuum pump to the black lunchbox on the cases that no-one has remarked on but is actually an oil cooler without hoses. All very impressive, though way above my needs or budget...
