Re: [DucatiST] Re: ExactFit Timing belts

Cam timing will vary by several degrees as you adjust tension, Rolland. You can prove it to yourself by setting up a degree wheel with gauges for measuring lift. As you increase or decrease tension, you will change the lift value. One mm of lift is the spec Ducati specs to determine when valve opening is to occur. They use that value to get off the lead in ramp and get more accurate timing specs. A person who wants the most their engine can do will want to follow that lead. Degreeing the cams is the best way to ensure that your engine is performing in peak form. Belt tension assures that it performs correctly at normal operating temps. That is how they came up with the numbers I posted earlier. I'm not trying to start an argument, rather I'm trying to pass along some factory tips. If you don't care to utilize them, I'm good with that. My engines are set up for optimum performance at any RPM, because I set them up to factory specs, including valve/cam timing.

Belt tension is not just for belt life, it also makes sure cam timing is correct when the bike is hot.

That's what the teeth do: keep cam timing correct.

As long as the belts are between tight enough to stay on and loose enough to not load the cam bearing you are good to go.
