Let me get this right: you're saying taking the heads off a ST3 to adjust the shims is easier than doing it with them in place? How is this possible considering you'd have to remove and replace the airbox, intake runners/tb assembly, exhaust headers, (drain the coolant?), need special tools to get at the bolts, possibly new gaskets etc? Seems like a heck of a lot more work to save a little pain.

It is easier to learn with the head on the bench, but it is not necessary to do the adjustment. If you think about it, they certainly don't drop the engine at the dealership. If you think the service is expensive now, imagine what it would be like if they had to drop the engine every time!
