Dave, I think you'll find they are 6mm threads, even if the head of the OEM bolt is a 8mm hex. This is a favourite Ducati/Cagiva ploy!
Whatever, I used nyloc nuts inside but the biggest help was to make some big thick nylon washers that I could keep hold of while working up-and-under! So-called 'penny' washers (or repair washers) would be almost as good, but you'll be cursing if you just go for normal small-diameter ones....
