So often it helps to have someone else throw some clarity at a problem.
I followed Mark's advice and checked voltages at every junction from battery
through solenoid and beyond. Battery is a little low but showed 12.28V; all
the way through the solenoid on both trigger and supply circuits I got over
12.2V. Until I got to the starter terminal where I got 0.2V!
Whipped the cable off again and it showed 0.0 Ohms. Until I gave it a little
twist and it showed 4.5 Ohms. Remounted it and gave it a viscious twist and
the starter kicked when I hit the button. Popped into CIrencester and
bought a new HD cable and all is now good; it starts reliably.
The old cable had an internal break and must have had just enough contact to
show no resistance on the meter but when faced with a couple of hundred amps
just threw up its hands. Apart from being pretty weedy it looked fine
externally.
Now I just have to test the reg/rec and stator and see where the charging
fault (which I was expecting!) is...
Thanks to all who have offered advice, and especially Mark!
