Re: [DucatiST] Re: Full Floater? (was Vibrating front)

Dear Colin,
I understand your frustration with a continuing fault that hasn't responded to your many "fixes".

Regarding "It would be good to hear a bit more science than hearsay" we have to remember that most most forum/list members will not be scientists or experts in braking technology.  They are merely passing on suggestions they have heard about, read about or even tried successfully themselves.  The number of "fixes" suggested indicates that brake vibration/shudder is a multi-facetted problem.  If someone posts something that worked for them it means they found the cause of the problem on their bike.  e.g.  I was lucky and fixed juddering with a simple freeing up of the buttons.  It would seem that you haven't isolated the cause on your ST4S ....... yet.  Maybe the banjo bolt might be worth a try.

I agree with your comment about "local bike shop advises replacement discs and pads".  Many dealers are more interested in a possible quick fix with a good profit margin rather than a long fault finding process that requires an experienced, skilled mechanic and I especially don't like replacing parts that have nothing wrong with them.

Eddy

I have had my ST4S for many years now and have NEVER  truly sorted the shuddering front disc issue.

It has often improved with things I've done...sometimes its disappeared for a few weeks, but it has always come back.

I replaced steering head bearings with tapered rollers with care and diligence making sure the seating was perfect.

I've regularly cleaned and spun the disc buttons with brake cleaner and an easyout on a battery drill.

Removed and checked discs for runout.

Did the multi times heavy braking and release procedure.

Scrubbed disc surfaces clean of pad residues.

Eased button tabs to create full floating discs.

Ensured I never held front brake on after hard stops that might leave pad residues on disc.

I have to admit I haven't replaced the pads as its never made sense to me how the pads alone could cause these symptoms...whats the physics behind a pad material grabbing and not grabbing as a disc spins underneath it?

And I haven't replaced the banjo bolt.....And I'm thinking I could/will/might do that next.

With persistent issues like this there's an enormous amount of owners advice that suggests solutions that just don't seem to stand up to scrutiny.
ST brake shudder is a huge topic and I've read most threads including those that seemed very plausible.

The local bike shop advises replacement discs and pads...which is exactly how a local bike shop can be expected to behave.....but if there's nothing wrong with either of the discs or pads ...why should I do that??
It would be good to hear a bit more science than hearsay.
